Whether you have one or more children starting or returning to school this September, it can be an extremely costly time for parents. From school books to new shoes the expense list is endless and, for a lot of mums, it can be very worrying.

Whether you have started your shop or not, if you are concerned about meeting the costs the following tips should help you out:

1. Repair and mend uniforms

Before you head out and spend a fortune on a new uniform check to see if you can let down the hem or mend a hole yourself. Unless it is in absolute rag order don’t buy a new one.

2. Ask around for second hand items

If you do need to get them a new one ask family and friends for a second hand one. Most mums will be delighted to pass on their old uniforms to someone who will wear them, usually just to get them out of the house!

3. Don’t buy new books

If you can help it, try to get as many second hand books as possible, either at the shop or from family and friends. Most are barely even used and they can be extremely pricey when bought new. If you have to buy new, do shop around for the best price.

4. Look for special promotions

Keep an eye out for any special promotions on stationary, clothing or shoes - if you are savvy enough you will be able to get something for half its original price. If you can, wait until October to to pick up anything you need as some shops will have a sale on.

5. Have a scan of the house

Before you go out and buy a bulk of pens and pencils, have a look around the house for anything that can be reused. Check drawers, bedrooms and evening the living room for any pencils that might have rolled under the couch.

6. There’s a lot to be said for a good wash

If you find a pencil case that looks a little grubby or a school bag that has a little smell, pop it into the washing machine and give it a good clean. You’ll be surprised by how good it can come up.

7. Only buy what you need

Just because it’s back to school time doesn’t mean you have to go out and buy a new pair of runners or shoes. Check last year’s ones before you buy another pair  as they might still fit your little one.
