A games store in Melbourne, Australia, has shown – in a few simple words – why gender stereotypes are basically rubbish.
It’s sad that we still have to argue the toss on this, but we will anyway: women are just as happy watching a horror film or a meaty psychological thriller as they would be a romantic comedy. Despite what some people believe – wrongly – sex is absolutely no basis for taste, and to be honest, it’s a pretty insulting concept.
So we mentally clapped when we saw the sign a (male) staff member stuck on a stand of games in a JB Hi-Fi store. It simply said, “Games For Girls”, but instead of having My Little Pony or the like, the stand contained the usual scary or (admittedly) violent fare.
But his point is this: whether you agree with the content of these games or not, they are not specifically for boys. They are for whoever is into them – period.
“I'm tired of customers asking for ‘Games that girls will like’ so we made this,” Morris Umali said in the Facebook post.
“All the women I know are playing the shooters and scary games. I'm the one playing Animal Crossing and crying at To The Moon.”
i love JB HiFi. tired of being asked what games girls would like, they made a "Games for Girls" section :) pic.twitter.com/cgvZSAcZv6
