Call The Midwife applauded by fans for tragic illegal abortion storyline

Just a note that they are spoilers ahead for Sunday night Call The Midwife episode.

The BBC period drama is known for tackling difficult issues and this weekend's offering was no different.

We met Jeanie, Nurse Trixie Franklin's friend, who found herself pregnant with her third child.

Already a mum-of-two, she couldn't afford another one.

After being turned away by Dr. Turner who has to follow the law or lose his doctor’s licence, she headed to an illegal clinic.

Jeanie then contracted a deadly infection and sadly passed away.

Trixie later gives an emotional speech about having abortions legalised.

She said, ''Jeanie was unhappy. Jeanie was frightened. Jeanie did not want to have a baby, and I can also tell you that we see this all the time.''

She continued, ''Young, young girls, exhausted older women, mothers who don’t know when their next penny or next beating is coming from, and others who want to take control of their bodies and their lives.''

She added, ''And All we can do is pat them on the hand and say “you’ll manage, everybody does”. But not everybody does. Not everybody believes us. So sorry. I can’t help you. I’m even more sorry that I couldn't help her.''

Fans watching the show were full of praise for the sensitive topic which was handled with care.

One said, ''Not only is #callthemidwife the most entertaining and heartwarming show on tv, but it is also one of the most educational and powerful, every time I watch it whether it be an old or new episode I learn something new, tonight's episode was so powerful and important to many women.''

While another wrote, ''I watch #callthemidwife every week with my two girls (15 and 22) I’m so glad that they love it as much as I do (15-year-old watching from Season, in fact,ct to catch up) So beautifully done and raising awareness of the situations woman found themselves in not that long ago.''
