If your baby has a blocked tear duct, then there are some mild complications which can arise. Occasionally the eye may become red but this will likely come and go. This is as a result of mild inflammation and no treatment is needed. This can also develop into conjunctivitis but is usually a mild form of it. The eye may become inflamed and red. Antibiotic eye drops are sometimes prescribed to help clear conjunctivitis.
 
Occasionally a watering eye can be symptomatic of other problems. The following symptoms may indicate a different problem and if they occur you should consult with a G.P.
 
  • If the eye becomes inflamed, angry or red
  • If the baby rubs the eyes or seems in pain
  • If baby is showing signs of being sensitive to light
  • If the structure of an eye or eyelids doesn’t seem right
