The success rate of cataract surgery is very high however there can be complications which can be distressing for the patient. Complications after cataract surgery are generally causes by:

  • Not wearing glasses to correct post-operative refractive error
  • Failure to detect other pre-existing eye conditions, such as macular degeneration or amblyopia
  • Surgical complications, such as; corneal swelling, infection, posterior capsule opacification (where the lens becomes cloudy again after surgery)

Complications are rare and surgery is generally successful, if you do have any concerns you should speak to your ophthalmologist.

It is also worth noting that if you have a medical condition, such as diabetes, that increases the risk of cataracts you should have an eye examination more frequently (once a year or as recommended by your G.P.)
