There are some genuine everyday heroes out there that deserve special recognition for their devotion and bravery, and Houston gynaecologist Dr Bassem Maximos is one such person.

Maximos has come in for major praise this week after wading through a flood to make it to hospital to deliver two babies.

The courageous doctor reportedly became stranded in his car after getting caught up in a flood while on his way to work earlier this week.

Posed with a huge dilemma, Maximos showed incredible dedication and bravery by making the decision to get out of the car and try to make his way on foot to the hospital.

Recalling the scary incident to local media, Dr Maximos said: “As soon as I opened the door, water just hit me in my face. I left the car in the middle of the road, just got out and started walking.”

Maximos went on to wade through waist-high water for half a mile before reaching the hospital, while mums-to-be Monika Thiede and Melissa Vasquez endured labour.

Commenting on the moment when she was told that Dr Maximos might not make it to the hospital in time, Thiede revealed that she “started to cry a bit”.

However, she needn’t have worried, as a determined Dr Maximos made it to the Houston hospital in time to deliver Thiede’s son Bradley, as well as Vasquez’s daughter Mila.

Dr Maximos – who had been on the phone to the mothers’ nurses during his journey, in order to stay updated on their progress – was modest as he revealed that “it was a group effort” to get the babies delivered.

What an incredible man!
