Prime Minister David Cameron has pledged his commitment to stamping out poverty in the UK, and yesterday revealed that education and attitudes in the classroom would be playing a vital role in his plan.
In an impassioned speech on social reform, delivered yesterday at a school in Islington, Cameron called on teachers all over the country to become ‘tiger mums’ in the classroom.
A ‘tiger mum’ is the title commonly attributed to mothers who raised their children with strict discipline geared towards high achievement.
Suggesting that poverty can be dealt a blow by parents and teachers who set high expectations for children, the Prime Minister said: “It is what the Tiger Mothers’ battle hymn is all about: work, try hard, believe you can succeed, get up and try again. It is, if you like, the precise opposite of an ‘all must have prizes’ culture that permeated our schools under the last government.”
Cameron also reportedly rejected the idea that teachers should abandon the teaching of times tables due to the availability of calculators and app.
“Children thrive on high expectations: it is how they grow in school and beyond,” added the father-of-four, urging the policy to be taken on board in schools across the country.
