Every new parent finds that they aren’t getting enough sleep. It’s just one of those things that come with being a parent! While you might have heard the old advice to sleep when your baby sleeps, leave the housework and other tips, you’re probably still sleep deprived! Here are eight real ways you and your partner can get a few extra hours of sleep.

If you have a cradle that rocks, tying a rope or string to it that allows you to rock it from bed can be a great way to avoid being wide awake at 3am when your child has drifted back to sleep. Just make sure it’s out of your child’s reach.

New parents should also invest in breast pumps. That way, mum can express enough for a feed before bed time and dad can do the next feed. Each of you will get a few extra hours of unbroken sleep if you take turns this way.

Another idea is to alternate with your partner. Take turns with who gets up on which day with your child. That way you’re guaranteed a decent night’s sleep at least one night out of two.

If you’re up anyway, a snack to boost your energy can go a long way to making you feel a little bit more energetic in the morning. Choose quick and easy options like toast or yoghurt.

Make your children’s bedtime your bedtime. If you stay up an extra few hours to finish chores and tasks, only to have your child wake a half an hour after you’ve drifted off, you’re sure to feel drained the next day. So wait until tomorrow with whatever else you need to do and focus on getting enough sleep.

Having your baby sleep in a crib in your own room can be one of the best ways to limit the time and effort involved in midnight feedings.

Finally, you could have definite shifts with your partner. Divide the night up into equal parts and each of you take a shift to stay awake (or get up if necessary) while the other sleeps.
