According to a report in the Lincolnshire Echo, experts are expecting a surge in the number of rat infestations in homes over the festive season.
The spike in number of the creatures is down to a combination of weather conditions and domestic factors, with icy temperatures and over-flowing rubbish bins expected to attract the rats and drive them indoors.
With the creatures’ ability to squeeze through gaps and cracks as small as 2cm, experts are warning families to be vigilant and monitor potential entry points in their homes.
Speaking to the paper, Rob Simpson, managing director of pest controller BASIS PROMPT, warned:
“There are likely to be many more rats than usual at the moment thanks to the abnormally mild conditions throughout the UK this year. People who don’t take precautions could be getting unexpected guests who are less welcome than the in-laws.”
The first sign of a rat infestation in the home is said to be “noises in the loft”, so families are warned to be vigilant for any unusual sounds.
