We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again – it’s vitally important to ensure that you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home.

The point was driven home this week, when a smoke alarm alerted a Welsh family to a fire in their home – started by none other than their adorable puppy.

The Thomas family told The Mirror that their four-month-old Labrador, Ted, is currently teething and somehow managed to switch on their electric grill pan while searching for something to chew on in the middle of the night. The pan caught fire, sparking flames and sending smoke billowing throughout the house.

The smoke alarm was soon activated, and while mum Rachel initially thought she was hearing her morning alarm, she got a rude awakening when she switched on the light and saw the smoke.

The couple ensured that their six- and three-year-old children were safe, and contacted emergency services. Thankfully, no one was injured in the accident.

Encouraging families everywhere to install a smoke detector if they don’t already have one, dad Robert said: "I am thankful for the alarm, it was a godsend. I would say to anyone to get it fitted properly."
