It's not exactly news that a child's intelligence is a result of genes and stimulation at home.
But the nurture element isn’t just about filling your house with books and encouraging your child to study.
That’s what a recent study has found.
Published in Psychological Science, the study found that one of the biggest factors determining a child’s achievement and motivation is their parents’ attitude to failure.
Basically, it found that parents who are comfortable with failure, who focus on learning from it, pass on a healthy mindset to their children that intelligence is something that can grow and improve.
Meanwhile, parents who show only worry and anxiety when faced with failure (e.g. if their child gets a bad grade) pass on the mindset that intelligence is fixed and can’t be changed.
The problem? If you believe intelligence is fixed and cannot be influenced by you yourself, then you’re less likely to do anything to try and change it.
This makes a lot of sense when you think about it. Here’s to teaching kids that they always work on things.
