Last night, swimmer Adam Peaty not only won a gold medal but broke a world record, so it’s not surprising his nan was in a celebratory mood last night.

The 21-year-old smashed the record books as he finished his 100 m breaststroke in 57.13 seconds and won Team GB their very first gold of the Rio Olympics.

He was also the first British man to win gold in swimming for the first time in 28 years.

Wanting to show just how proud she is of her grandson, Mavis Williams took to Twitter to send congratulations to the Staffordshire star, posting a series of tweets last night.

“My Grandson has done it,” the 74-year-old, whose hashtag, #OlympicNan, has gone viral, wrote.

“You have made it, your hard work paid off."

Talking about his win to The Sun, Adam said it was an honour to be the first Briton to win gold since Adam Moorhouse won in the same event nearly 30 years ago.

“I knew that to be the first Briton to do that would be an honour. But going into this race I was so composed and calm. I wasn’t even thinking about that,” he told the publication.

“Now I have done it, it is an absolute honour to get that gold for Team GB. It’s so surreal.

“Nothing means more to me than racing for my country, the Queen, the Royal Family and the people back home that support me."
