A US woman has gone public with her decision to sue her transgender daughter, claiming she is taking the action ‘in the benefit of all parents and families’.
Anmarie Calgaro, from Minnesota, has brought the action against her child on the grounds that she was not consulted about the teen’s gender transition.
Ms Calgaro believes that, as a result, her rights as a parent have been violated.
In a live-streamed press conference, an emotional Ms Calgaro revealed that her daughter obtained a Notice of Emancipation without her knowledge.
“It was brought to my attention that my son began receiving hormone replacement treatments…to transition from male to female, with medical assistance paying for this. I was not consulted or informed about this in any way,” she said.
Ms Calgaro, who is also suing health officials and a school district, said she feels ‘robbed’ over being left in the dark about such a major life decision.
“I know his emotional and physical needs in a way no one else can. I also have a commitment to him that no one else has. I feel that not only was I robbed of the opportunity to help and guide my son [to] make good decisions, but I also feel he was robbed of a key advocate in his decisions – his mother,” she added.
Ms Calgaro was keen to stress that she loves her child 'unconditionally' and wants to ensure that she doesn't regret her choice later in life.
