Some families' Love Actually-esque reunions may be delayed, after the Bristol Airport closed today.

An Embraer 145 aircraft landed in Bristol, an hour late, and went off the runway as it was taxiing back to the gate, the Independent reports.

Thankfully, none of the 25 people onboard the BMI jet were injured.

However, because of the incident Bristol Airport has closed today, the busiest travel day of the year.

Due to this incident, sixteen flights have been diverted so far while many more are being cancelled. Flights are being sent to other airports like Birmingham and Gatwick.

BMI has cancelled their services flying out to Frankfurt and Hamburg, while KLM have stopped their flights to and from Amsterdam.

EasyJet's cancellations include domestic flights to Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Inverness, but there is a rail option available for those destinations.

However, easyJet travellers due to go to Belfast, Pisa, Prague, Rome, Toulouse and Venice will have more difficulty with their holiday plans.

"We thank passengers for their patience while we continue to work to resume operations as soon as possible," a representative for the airport told the Independent.

"In the meantime, all passengers are advised to contact their airline to obtain the latest flight information. Additional staff are on hand in the terminal to assist passengers."

Travellers whose plans have been disrupted should contact airlines, who are obligated to get passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible. This even entails booking people on rivals' flights.

People are entitled to hotels and meals until they get where they're going, but they are not entitled to compensation.
