A pregnant doctor helped a woman deliver a baby just hours before she gave birth herself.

Doctor Amanda Hess was preparing to have her baby, at the Frankfort Regional Medical Centre in Kentucky last weekend, when she “overheard the nurses preparing for a woman in active labour who needed to deliver immediately because the baby was in distress". This is according to an account of events shared on Facebook, by Dr Hala Sabry.

The woman in question was Leah Halliday Johnson, whom Doctor Hess had examined previously during her pregnancy. Leah was fully dilated and waiting for the doctor on-call to help her with the delivery.

However, the situation became urgent and Doctor Hess, an obstetrician and gynaecologist, had to act immediately before any harm could happen to the mum or baby.

“I put on some boots over my flip flops and found another gown to cover myself up and delivered a baby,” said Dr Hess, according to LEX-18.

"I said you know, I'm not on call, I'm here in a gown, but I think we ought to have the baby."

"She was definitely in doctor mode. My husband noticed something was going on because she had on a hospital gown, but I didn't notice that because I was on the delivery table. I was in my own world there," said Leah.

“Pretty amazing what she did. I feel very lucky she was there and the type of person she is and step up to what she did. We really appreciate her.”

Leah safely gave birth to a baby girl. A few minutes later, Doctor Hess’ contractions began. The doctor later gave birth to a daughter named Ellen Joyce.

"She's definitely earned her time off," Leah said.

"I appreciate what she did for my family, and it speaks a lot to who she is as a woman and a mother as well as a doctor. It makes you feel better, bringing a baby girl into the world, knowing there are women like her willing to step up like that."

The doctor humbly insists that it’s all in a day’s work: "Delivering other peoples' babies is something I do every day," she said.

"And I'm more comfortable with delivering someone else's baby than my own, for sure."

This is Leah’s fourth child, while Doctor Hess just had her second.

The heroic doctor is now on some well-deserved maternity leave.
