Tributes have been pouring in following the death of 11-year-old Leon Carlisle, who passed away after an argument with his parents in their home in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

The youngster, who was described as a popular pupil at St. Mary’s Christian Brother Grammar School, was found unconscious after being sent to his room for having a “tantrum”.

His father, John, took to Facebook to dispel any rumours surrounding the incident, according to the Mirror, writing: “It feels like I’ve woken up to a nightmare. Leon was sent to his room for arguing with his parents over dinner like any other child does."

“This was an 11-year-old child having a tantrum over his dinner trying to win an argument with his parents and not understanding the consequences of his actions," he continued.

"He wasn’t depressed, he loved life and he wasn’t being bullied, he had loads of friends and loved getting out to play. What he did was an accident and happened in the space of five minutes."

Following the youngster’s death, his school took to Facebook to pay tribute to Leon, where they wrote that “his loss will be sorely felt throughout the whole school and wider community.”

John’s own football club Iveagh United also took to the social media page to send their condolences to the family:

"It is with great sadness that Iveagh Utd FC wish to offer our condolences to the McNaughton/Carlisle families on the passing of young Leon Carlisle last night," they wrote.

"Leon's father John is a vital player at the club and a person that is very popular amongst all of the squad.

"We offer our support to the families at this difficult time and that John's club Iveagh Utd are here for any support or help needed."
