Kristen Bell, who stars in the new film Bad Moms with Mila Kunis and Jada Pinkett Smith, has taken it upon herself to share the less glamorous side of motherhood, revealing that contrary to social media, it is actually fairly “gross”.

Kristen, who is mum to three-year-old Lincoln and Delta, who is one, with Parenthood actor Dax Shephard, was speaking to Redbook magazine when she said it wasn’t fair how social media was portraying an unrealistic idea of being a mum.

“In the age of social media, when you can edit your life in beautiful pictures, it’s important to remind moms that all of us are wearing yogurt and all of our hands smell like urine," Kristen said.

“When you present an unrealistic idea of perfection to people, it’s not fair.”

The 36-year-old, who has campaigned to stop tabloids getting pictures of her kids, also candidly spoke about how she is not as nice as her daughters would like, explaining that she likes to put her foot down.

"Recently I've had an epiphany that if I'm as nice to my daughter as I want to be, she's not going to respect me," she said.

"Giving your kids strong boundaries is good for them, because if you just let them do whatever they want, you raise a jerk."
