It’s often in our darkest moments that we manage to summon a hidden bravery, and this can certainly be said of Kristian Guerrero.
Kristian, 24, has issued a defiant and important message this week, following the tragic loss of her husband and unborn child in a car crash.
The Texas couple were driving in their car when a drunk-driver’s vehicle veered off into their lane and struck them head-on.
Kristian, who was 19 weeks pregnant at the time, lost her husband Fabian in the accident.
She was rushed to hospital, where she was induced, but her baby was stillborn.
Now recovering, Kristian took to Facebook this week to beg people not to drink and drive.
Posting a photo of herself, in her hospital bed, and her wrecked car, she wrote: “This is what being in an induced labour for almost 24 hours after surviving a car crash that killed my husband and my son looks like. All because someone thought it was OK to get wasted and drive. It's not OK.”
Urging drivers reading her post to be responsible, she added: “It's a sign of maturity to be honest with yourself and know the consequences of driving drunk outweigh any kind of shame you might feel admitting you're too drunk to drive. What's not OK is spending the rest of your life with the guilt of knowing you've taken someone's life and taken someone's life away before they even got a chance to be in this world.”
She went on to insist that, as devastated as she may be, she will continue to ‘fight this fight’ for Fabian and their little one.
“I will continue to spread awareness and share this story until the day I die in hopes it prevents anyone else from feeling the pain I walk around with every day. I refuse to let my husband and my son’s deaths be in vain,” she wrote.
