Nearly a week after she was killed, Jo Cox’s widower will lead global tributes to the MP today on what would have been her 42nd birthday.
Brendan Cox will attend the rally being held in London’s Trafalgar Square today to honour the memory of his wife who died last week in Leeds.
Events will also be taking place around the world to show respect and pay tribute to her work.
Beirut, Brussels, Melbourne, Nairobi, New York and Washington DC will join Jo’s hometown Batley in remembering the MP and the “love, energy, passion, flair and belief in the humanity of every person in every place”, organisers said.
In the days leading up to Glastonbury Festival, a charity album will be released featuring artists such as Coldplay and Muse as well as a tribute on the festival’s Park Stage.
At 4.25pm today, a moment of silence will be help around the world to remember the mum-of-two.
Brendan Cox has been overwhelmed by the support of the public in the days since his wife’s tragic death.
In a statement he said:
“The two things that I’ve been very focused on is how do we support and protect the children, and how do we make sure that something good comes out of this.”
Brendan now cares for the couples five-year-old, Cuillin and three-year-old, Lejla and said he has been touched by the grief he and his children have shared with the world.
“And what the public support and outpouring of love around this does is it also helps the children see that what they’re feeling and other people are feeling, that the grief that they feel isn’t abnormal, that they feel it more acutely and more painfully and more personally, but that actually their mother was someone who was loved by lots of people and that therefore, it’s OK to be upset and it’s OK for them to cry and to be sad about it.”
