The mother of a seven-year-old boy who was knocked down and killed while crossing the road to post a letter has called for a ban on hands-free calls while driving.

Alice Husband’s son, Seth Dixon, died in 2014 after being struck by driver Amy Asker, who was taking a call on speakerphone at the time.

The coroner confirmed that the use of the phone at the time contributed to the accident and Seth’s tragic death.

Asker, who admitted to careless driving, walked away from the hearing with a £90 fine and five points on her driver’s licence.

Now, heartbroken Alice is calling for British ministers to implement a ban on taking hands-free calls while driving.

In an interview with the Mirror, she said: “Because the technology is there, the general opinion is that hands-free kits are safe. That’s the message I want to change. It needs to be shown that this is as unacceptable as drink-driving.”

“Lives are too precious; Seth was too precious,” she added.

In her petition, Alice reiterates that ‘no phone call is worth a distraction that could cause death’.
