Despite boasting attractions such as Hyde Park, a colossal Harrod's and the Natural History Museum, London has been ranked as the worst city in the UK to raise a child. The verdict is according to a survey by price-comparison website MoneySuperMarket.

It looked at various factors in determining its list, such as house prices, the number of 'outstanding' schools, average salary, crime rates and crime rates.

With the average house price standing at a dizzying £484,803, and having nine 'burglary hotspots'; the capital suffered in the rankings.

However, in terms of job opportunity, London ranked number one, with over 147,000 jobs; and also ranked best in terms of average salary, which is estimated at £36,233. It also has the most outstanding schools, with 78.

Newcastle-upon-Tyne took the top spot for raising children. The North-East city has 28 schools ranked as 'outstanding', and a plethora of parks and green spaces. The average price of a house won't make you wince too hard, either - this stands at £161,255.

The data-visualised map is pretty interesting for a getting a gauge of each city's economic standing. For example, while Stoke-on-Trent's average house price is at the low, low price of £101,594; the city, in Staffordshire, has the worst salaries, with a measly average of £22,932.00 and only 12,536 job opportunities.

Cities Derby and Wolverhampton followed in second and third place overall, for rearing children.

A MoneySuperMarket spokeswoman said: "The Family Living Index was created to guide parents – or soon-to-be parents – looking to future-proof their next move.

"As well as choosing where to raise their families, moving home is also a key life-stage decision, and is one of the most common moments for couples to take out life insurance to protect their family financially should anything."
