The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) have voted in favour of joining other NHS workers in October’s strike. The motion to strike passed by an overwhelming 82%.

This comes after both Unison and Unite, unions which represent over 400,000 workers between them, voted to strike after a dispute over pay rises.

Cathy Warwick, chief executive of the RCM announced the result saying that “this is a resounding yes. It could not send a clearer signal about the level of discontent on this issue.”

The four hour walk out will occur on October 13th from 7am to 11am, and will affect ante-natal and post-natal appointments scheduled that morning.

The Royal College of Midwives has assured the public that midwives will still be on hand to deliver babies and deal with emergencies.

“The RCM will be meeting with employers to discuss our action and to ensure that mothers and babies are not put at any risk,” Cathy stated.

“I want to reassure women expecting a baby that midwives will continue to look after them and that they will be safe.”
