Following a shocking display of vandalism in Newcastle's West End last night, Blakelaw councillor, David Stockdale, has urged the public to come forward with any information they may have regarding the spate of shocking crimes.

According to media reports, those responsible for the crimes torched a children's playground, kicked in the doors of residents' houses and burgled local homes in the Blakelaw area of the city.

With Northumbria Police confident that those involved in last night's crime spree are youths aged between 13 and 15-years-old, councillor Stockdale condemned their acts, asserting: “It’s just mindless violence and wrongdoing. There can not have been anything sensible going through their heads."

Reflecting on the repercussions the vandalism has had on the area, Mr. Stockdale continued: "People are devastated. We paid for the park out of our own budget and had to save up for three years. It was well-loved and well-used."

With police estimating that approximately £15,000 worth of damage has been done to the recently-refurbished Blakelaw Park, Mr. Stockdale expressed disbelief at the sheer magnitude of the crime spree, saying:" Whatever kick they got out of it, they will pay for their crime. If they are prepared to do this, what else are they prepared to do?"

Reassuring local residents that police presence has been subsequently increased since the shocking events, inspector Julie Rana explained: "In response to last night’s incidents officers from the Neighbourhood Policing Team have stepped up patrols in the area and there will be a presence there today, tonight and going forward."

Members of the public have been asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference number 1029 16/02/16 if they have any information relating to last night's events.
