With a storm brewing, Ronnie and Krystal Stewart were running to their car when they spotted two young homeless boys on the footpath.

"As parents of three kids, how do you go home and just leave them there looking like that?," Krystal told Today.com.

So they didn't.

The couple approached the boys' parents and asked to take the boys home for a night so they could have a bath and sleep in a warm bed.

They weren't sure how the offer would go down, but the parents were nothing but grateful.

The Stewarts (see Ronnie above with his soon-to-be son) grabbed a playpen and twin mattress from the church and took the boys, aged two and one, home, where they slept for over ten hours.

"I don't think they've ever slept in a bed before," Krystal said.

The next day, the couple handed the boys back to their parents, and told them if they ever wanted the boys to have a warm bed, just call them.

And it wasn't long before a call came through.

That Saturday at midnight, the parents asked the Stewarts to collect the boys. Again, they took the boys home for a warm night's sleep and returned them before church the next morning.

But as they were walking out a few hours later, the Department of Social Services and policemen were waiting, having been discussing living arrangements with the boys' parents.

"They asked if we could take them in. Next thing I knew, the boys were in my backseat with my kids on their way home with us," Krystal said.

"We had no idea what the future had planned for us."

Just a few days later, the couple's own children, Ronnie (15), Riley (13) and Selah (8) had already started calling the boys their brothers.

In late February, Ronnie and Krystal sat down with a social worker and the boys' parents, who had many options to choose from. But they only wanted the boys to be with the Stewarts.

By the end of the month, the adoption process will be finalised and the boys will officially be part of the Stewart clan.

"There's been a bond from the first day we took them in," Krystal said. "We're so grateful for this unexpected blessing."
