Most people react in bafflement when they hear a story of someone who didn’t realise they were pregnant until they gave birth. How is it possible? Many women can barely get off the sofa at 38 weeks, how could someone not know?

But that’s exactly what happened to 22-year-old Kate Hudson, who went from interrailing with her friends one week to becoming a mum the next.

Kate had been travelling across Europe for two months and having the time of her life. Two months in, she realised she had missed her period, took a pregnancy test.

“I was in Barcelona on my own and that’s when I started to get a little scared, since I hadn’t seen my boyfriend in 7 weeks, I thought I could be more than 7 weeks pregnant,” Kate said.

“So I freaked myself out. Didn’t help being alone half way across the world. I bought a pregnancy test and took it in San Sebastián. Positive.”

Kate called her long-term boyfriend Aaron, who was back home in Australia. “I wasn’t showing at all and had no symptoms, so we assumed it would be early days.”

To Kate’s shock, she was told she was 33 weeks along.

“I totally freaked out. I thought she said 13 weeks – not 33! No way was I ready to have a baby. I’m only 22. No job, and no money. And no time to prepare ... The baby was coming and coming fast, so I just had to prepare and get back home. I didn’t have time to process it until the flight home, where I basically cried for the 22 hours”

When she got home, further tests showed she was more than 33 weeks – she was overdue. She was induced and gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Mason.

“I was scared because I didn’t know if the baby was healthy,” Kate confided. “Obviously having not known for so long, I was exercising heaps, jumping off cliffs, riding bikes, drinking alcohol and eating anything and everything. The baby’s health was both mine and Aaron’s main concern.”

Doctor’s figured out the reason Kate was showing so little bump – a tilted uterus. But the lack of symptoms is still hard to explain.

“I had absolutely no real clear symptoms,” Kate says. “I was still getting regular periods. I wasn’t nauseous, no morning sickness, little weight gain, so it seemed silly to think I would be pregnant. All I had leading up to it was constipation, and I went from a C-cup to a D-cup.”

Kate is adjusting to her sudden life as a mum, and is taking it in her stride.

“I have a beautiful healthy baby boy, my relationship with Aaron is stronger than ever so I can’t complain too much. I’ve just gotta’ roll with it and make the most of it. Mason’s here and I’m going to try to be the best parent I can be for him.”
