Lynsey and John O’Callaghan have had a difficult last few months since the birth of their son Joshua, as he was born with his bowel outside of his body.

Lynsey from Merseyside in the UK was told during her 12 week scan that were was something potentially wrong with her baby. However, she didn’t know the full extent of Joshua’s condition, until his birth in November.

Little Joshua had surgery within 48 hours of his birth and was forced to spend his first few months in intensive care.

Joshua was suffering from a condition called Gastroschisis, which means when he was born his bowel was trapped in his umbilical cord. This condition affects around one in 2,000 births.

Lynsey revealed the last few months have been very difficult for her and her husband.

“When he was born I could tell by the look my mum’s face that Joshua wasn’t right. It was such a shock to see my baby in that state. We were allowed a quick cuddle before he was whisked off to the intensive care unit.”

But since then Joshua has made a full recovery, has been christened and now is back home with his parents.

“Some women get chance to enjoy their pregnancy, but not me. Knowing from 12 weeks that there was going to be something wrong with my baby made it hell. Now we’ve finally got him home I can concentrate on making up for that.”
