Parents of children between the ages of three and 13 years old said they found summer holidays much more expensive than Christmas when it comes to entertaining their children.

A survey carried out among parents revealed  that they expect to spend £1,445 per child on various activities during the summer months in comparison to the £1,037 that they would spend at Christmas holiday time.

The survey asked about various types of activities such as trips to the cinema, play dates, eating out and summer clubs or camps.

And unsurprisingly, London topped the list for summer spending followed closely by Edinburgh with both cities nearing an estimate £2,000 spending per child for the summer holidays.

Annika Fagerstrom, consumer director for Epson UK, who commissioned the survey, said of the results:

"Our research found that summer school holidays are far more expensive than Christmas, when parents say they spend an average of £1,037."

The survey also found that parents struggled to keep their children entertained over the summer as they ran out of things to do.

"And it's not just the cost that troubles parents - over half (58%) admit they find themselves running out of things to do to keep their child entertained, and just under half (48%) feeling the summer holidays are too long."
