A new ban proposed by the Welsh government will see parents smacking their children made illegal in the country.

The move, which could come into effect later this year, will see politicians make changes to the parental laws and will also make Wales the first country in Britain too outlaw the practice.

The Wales Bill is currently being discussed by parliament and will also allow the Welsh Assembly to make changes to the “parental discipline” legislation.

With consultation papers expected in the summer, the legislation could be introduced as soon as autumn this year.

The move could have a knock on effect on England, Scotland and Northern Ireland as if seen as successful, the law could be introduced there as well.

Great Britain currently stands alongside only three other European countries to not have any ban in place against smacking.

However, there are those who have criticised the decision including Norman Wells of the Family Education Trust who said of the move:

“It is parents, and not national governments, who bear the responsibility for caring for their children, nurturing them, and correcting them where necessary," Mr Wells told the Independent.

"Generations of parents have proved the benefit of the occasional moderate smack to correct their children’s behaviour, and research continues to show its positive effects when used in the context of a loving home where children are respected and cherished."
