It’s hard to imagine a more awe-inspiring moment than when a baby makes his or her first appearance into the world. Snuggled inside mum’s tummy for the past nine months, that moment is the short but magical connection between the cosy womb and the world outside.
And capturing that incredible moment when the baby’s head first emerges, is birth photographer Marry Fermont, who kindly let us share these beautiful images from her ‘the birth of the head’ photo series.
“When you’re at a birth, you see a baby slowly come into the world,” Marry says. “You see it happen step-by-step and the moment is unbelievable, but once the baby is out it’s even more unbelievable. THAT fitted in your belly?”
Marry, who studied midwifery, became the first birth photographer in the Netherlands in 2011. Her powerful photo series sees these gorgeous, scrunchy-faced babies make their very first entrance, caught between two worlds.
“All these babies are not quite born yet, so they really are -10 seconds old,” says Marry.
