Parents were left with mixed feelings earlier this week, when a daycare centre shared a note urging parents to ‘get off their phones’ when collecting their children.
Now, a school in Portugal has come under the spotlight – for posting a sign reminding parents to teach basic manners and good values to their children.
Manners are so important, and it seems some teachers have found themselves disappointed and disillusioned by the low standards in their school.

The sign, directed at parents, begins: “We would like to remind you that magic words such as hello, please, you’re welcome, I’m sorry, and thank you, all begin to be learned at home.”
And school management placed further emphasis on the importance of the parents’ roles, as they touched on honesty, kindness and respect.
“It’s also at home that children learn to be honest, to be on time, diligent, show friends their sympathy, as well as show utmost respect for their elders and all teachers.”

One might think that children don’t need to be reminded not to speak with a full mouth, and to take care of their belongings – but, clearly, management at this school believe it bears repeating.
The final point of this sign may just act as a wakeup call to any parent sinking into their seat as they read it: school is a place where subjects are taught; not basic manners and good values.
“Here at school, on the other hand, we teach language, math, history, geography, physics, sciences, and physical education. We only reinforce the education that children receive from their parents,” the sign reads.
The five-point sign has come in for great praise across social media, with many declaring that this Portuguese school ‘has the right idea’.
