Many women fear the response in the workplace when they announce that they are expecting, and stories such as the following really emphasise why this is still such a major issue.

A lawsuit has been filed by a former employee of the popular online fashion company Nasty Gal, in which it is claimed that she was mistreated in the workplace after becoming pregnant.

Aimee Concepcion claims that she and three other female former employees had their contracts at the company terminated after sharing their baby news. She claims that a male employee also suffered the same fate, just as he was about to go on paternity leave.

The court documents filed by Concepcion reveal how her “employment with Nasty Gal was doomed from the minute she found out she was pregnant.”

Since the story went public – and viral – across the internet, the company’s founder, Sophia Amoruso, has hit back against the claims.

A statement issued on behalf of the company reads: “The accusations made in the lawsuits are false, defamatory and taken completely out of context. The layoffs in question were part of a larger restructuring of departments we completed over nine months ago. The lawsuits are frivolous and without merit.”

Since the lawsuit has reached the public forum however, another former employee has spoken out to share a rather scathing description of life at Nasty Gal headquarters. Etalia Gold reveals that the day before she attended a baby shower luncheon that her colleagues organised for her, she was informed that her contract was being terminated.

The portrait painted by these former employees is in direct contrast to companies such as that run by stylist Rachel Zoe, who recently opened up an in-office nursery for the working mums in her company.
