Being pregnant suddenly means you are the centre of attention for the world and its mother, and with it, unfortunately, comes unwanted advice that, yes, you can definitely live without. While usually well meant, here are five things you are likely to be told, by almost every person you meet.

You’ll need to stock up on sleep now

We all know that having a baby means we need to sacrifice on sleep but that doesn’t mean we need to be reminded about it Every. Single. Day. Telling an expectant mum that they need to stock up on sleep now is not only pretty annoying, it is also a load of nonsense – you can’t clock up snooze hours in the vain hope you’ll be able to call on them after your third sleepless night in a row.

What you can and cannot eat

It is well documented what pregnant women can and cannot eat, so there is no need for someone who has already had a baby to come up and tell you. Whether experienced or not, the mum-to-be’s doctor will have kept her informed about what is safe and what isn’t, she doesn’t need it repeated when you bump into her in the middle of the supermarket.

To take it easy

Seriously this is the type of advice that is really unnecessary – we’re sure any pregnant mother is looking after and not pushing themselves too much and the last thing they need is for someone to come up and say it to them – as if they weren’t already trying.

To stop going out

Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean you need to don your slippers for the next 18 or so years – while you definitely need to cut out the alcohol, you can still go out and enjoy yourself.

To capture every single moment

While one mother might like to capture every single moment on camera or film, not everyone is the same. Expectant mothers are well aware of just how fast pregnancy will be – we’ve been told a hundred times before and being told for the hundredth and one time is not going to make any difference.
