Pregnancy hormones, along with all those supplements expectant mums have to take, stimulate hair growth meaning that your hair will be a lot thicker and fuller while pregnant. While for many women having thicker hair is a dream come true, some women find their new fuller head of hair difficult to manage.

If your pregnancy hair is out of control then here are some tips on how to deal with thick, full hair:
  • Don’t wash your hair every day. Natural oils in your hair will help maintain your hair and if you wash it every day you are stripping these oils away.
  • Use conditioner. You might have only used a small amount of conditioner before to avoid greasy hair but now you have full, pregnancy hair you will need to use plenty of it.
  • Blow dry and straighten. Blow drying your hair straight and then using a straightner (ghd for the best results) will have your hair much silkier, allowing your hair to rest smoothly. Also try using a spray-in conditioner and then blow drying your hair as this will eliminate frizz and keep your hair more manageable.
  • Avoid layers. Do not cut layers into your hair. Weight helps think hair fall better and stay in position and layers will get rid of this weight. They are likely to go all over the place and will be very difficult to maintain while your hair is thick.
After pregnancy you will probably find you are having the opposite problem – you will loose your hair. Some women may think that the stress of having a new baby is causing them to loose their hair but in fact it is, once again, the hormones causing all this shedding. Hair loss can be a very difficult thing for a woman to cope with as a huge part of every woman’s beauty regime is her hair. New mums will probably already be looking tired and un-groomed so loosing their hair could send many mums over the edge. Here are a few tips on what to do if you are loosing your hair after giving birth.
  • Don’t panic. This hair loss won’t last long and is likely to stop once your hair your hormones have begun to regulate (about 3-6 months). You hair will then return to its normal volume. You aren’t going to have bald patches appearing across your head so relax.
  • Visit your hairdresser. Getting a hair cut will make your life a lot easier, not only because you are shedding but also because you’re a new mum. Get your hubby or a friend to mind the baby for a couple of hours and get yourself to a hairdresser. You don’t have to get a short crop but get a decent cut so hair loss won’t cause too many problems.
  • Use a thickening shampoo, conditioner and serum to prevent and treating hair loss. These products are often used by men who are dealing with hair loss and not only thicken hair but can prevent hair loss and stimulate growth.
