Doctors have long encouraged parents to sing and play music to their ‘bumps’, and new footage and research has proven why this is so important.

Researchers at a Spanish Institute recently carried out a study which proved that not only can babies hear music, but they can also respond to it inside the womb.

In incredible footage released by the team, foetuses are seen opening and closing their mouths, and sticking their tongues out in response to music played via what they have referred to as a ‘musical tampon’.

Significantly, the experts found that when music was played externally, beside the mother’s abdomen, the foetuses did not perceive it in the same way.

While the footage is incredibly heartwarming, the experts believe that this finding will help doctors improve ultrasound scans going forward.

The study has been published in the British Medical Ultrasound Society’s journal Ultrasound, under the title ‘Foetal facial expression in response to intravaginal music emission’.
