The threat of the Zika virus has overshadowed a lot of the build up to the Rio Olympics this summer and now it looks like Rory McIlroy has reservations about competing at all.

The world number three golfer is set to be a part of the Irish team for the Olympics this summer but is now hesitant it is said.

Rory is hoping to start a family with fiancée Erica Stoll in the next year or two but is concerned about the notable defects the Zika virus can cause in newborn babies.

Two golfers have already withdrawn from the competition because of worries about the virus, but Rory says his decisions isn’t definite yet but he will be keeping a close eye on the developments in Brazil.

“I have to monitor that situation because there’s going to be a point in time over the next couple of years where we’re going to have to think about starting a family and I don’t want anything to affect that.

“Right now I’m ready to go to the Olympics and go down to Rio and try to compete for a gold medal.”
