Most parents worry whether they are showing their child enough affection. Some confuse affection with material things, however. While it is true that your child will appreciate gifts, there is no substitute for your presence and attention. Here are a few tips to ensure that your child feels loved and special:

Make mornings special by developing your own little morning rituals with your child. Instead of rushing them out of bed, start the morning with laughter, cuddles, or songs, or develop your own special moments.

Physical touch is another way to make your child feel special, and it has been since she was born. Cuddling, tickling, hugging, or just lying together on the bed or couch is a great way to make your child feel special without saying a word.

Create your own special stories. By now you probably know how important books and stories are to your child’s development, but why not make them extra special by making up your own? You could play a story game with your child, where you alternate turns making up one line of your story. It has guaranteed to be fun!

Enlisting your child’s help in household chores can also make them feel special. Even very young children can help to carry laundry, or hold the hose on the car when you wash it. Your child can help you in the kitchen, help with tidying up, and even help with grocery shopping. Children love to know that their opinion and assistance matters, so let your child get involved.

Break a few rules. If you have a strict bedtime for your child, but you let them stay up an extra hour or two to watch a special movie with you, then she’s automatically going to feel special. Likewise, having dessert for dinner is likely to make your child happy, and feel special. The idea here is to stick to the rules most of the time, and to break them every once in a while.

Bedtime routines are another great way to make your child feel special. Since we are all so busy during the day, this may be the only time that the family has to spend together, and making it special really counts. Spend extra time playing with toys in the bath. Reading stories or even making up silly bedtime games can all make your child feel special and make bedtime more fun for everyone.

Get silly. Kids love silly, and whether it’s crazy songs, silly hats or celebrating a half birthday, your kids will love getting silly with you, and love you all the more for getting silly with them. The great thing is that your child does not judge you, so you can be as goofy as you like, without any worries!

Tell your child that you love them. Often. Tell them that you are proud of them. Celebrate their successes, and always make sure that they know how special they are, because you tell them.

Give your children special nicknames, or volunteer to chaperone their class to on a school trip. Put little notes in your child’s lunchbox, or wrestle with your child. Every little thing you do with your child helps to make him or her feel special.
