The Met Office has issued a nationwide weather warning as the British public brace themselves for the onslaught of Storm Katie.

With winds set to reach between 70 and 80 mph between today and tomorrow, drivers have been urged to exercise caution and be on the look-out for fallen trees and debris.

In addition to heavy winds, the public have been told to expect heavy rain and large waves in coastal areas of the country.

"An area of low pressure is expected to rapidly deepen to the south west of the UK later on Sunday and then run northeastwards across England and Wales on Monday accompanied by some very strong winds, large coastal waves and heavy rain."

It is understood that rainfall will continue into Tuesday while hail and thunder are also to be expected.
