We all know how tricky the weekly shop can be with the kids, and sometimes our resolve turns to jelly and we end up picking up sweet treats in a desperate bid to keep order.

If you can relate to the above scenario all too well, then you will be delighted by the latest announcement from Tesco.

The supermarket chain has announced that it is to begin handing out free fruit to children during the weekly shop, in over 800 stores around the country.

All stores involved in the scheme will be equipped with a special stand, to be stocked with apples, citrus fruits and bananas. Parents will be invited to pick the fruit up at the beginning of their shop, for their little ones to munch on.

The scheme – the brainchild of a Tesco shop assistant – was road-tested in Scotland last year, to much success.

Matt Davies, of Tesco UK, commented on the decision to roll out the scheme: “As a dad, I know it can be tricky getting children to eat their fruit and vegetables, so we’re hoping this initiative will help create healthy eating habits that will stay with children as they grow up.”
