“Can you drive faster like Daddy?”, "Can you make the 'yellow-box flash' like Mum does?", "Is Little Chef really little?"... these are just some of the hilarious things kids ask when they are being brought from A to B in their mum's (or dad's) 'taxi'!

And with one in five parents driving at least 40 miles a week either taking the kids to school, a sporting activity, appointments or a friend's house it is no surprise there are plenty of opportunities for lots of laughs in the car.

In fact, according to the stories collected by the UK’s leading car supermarket, Motorpoint, there is a common theme of a lack of loyalty from children when it comes to keeping the secrets of mum or dad’s driving habits.

One mum told of the time her children asked why she used the indicator when “dad never does.”

However, it's not all fun and games; Motorpoint’s research also uncovered that a fifth of mums and dads say the school run is causing them financial hardship.

Sadly, of those who took part in the survey, 17 percent felt the school run was putting real strain on their family’s finances with extra fuel costing the household over £300 a year alone.

And when it comes to both miles covered and time spent in the car, dads lead the way; a third of fathers drive their children over 30 miles per week, compared to just one in five mothers.

“Taking the kids to school, picking them up and then heading off to football or netball and so on can all feel like short journeys, but they soon add up in terms of time and money," Mark Carpenter of Motorpoint said.

“It’s no surprise to see a considerable amount of mums and dads saying then that taxiing children is a strain on their finances, especially with the amount of miles some are accumulating.

“Despite all this, some of the best childhood memories are made in the family car so even though such a high percentage of parents say they’d rather spend less time, we suspect some might miss these trips if they were gone.”
