Storms, earthquakes, hurricanes...no sort of bad weather can stop a baby who's intent on being born.

So midwife Cathy Allen Rude was pretty worried after a storm caused the area outside her Houston house to flood.

She'd agreed to deliver the baby on Monday morning, and knew it wouldn't wait for the water to recede.

A kayak ride to get Cathy down to the birth clinic fell through, but luckily one of her neighbours happened to be floating by - on an inflatable swan!

“We hauled all my stuff in and she walked me to the end of the street,” she told the McClatchy Wire Service.

The truck was waiting to whisk Cathy and the expectant mom off to the Katy Birth Center, where she helped deliver the baby boy, who weighed 9 pounds and 12.2 ounces.

“It all worked out great,” she said.

The family went home Monday night, but Cathy remained at the clinic Tuesday morning waiting for another client’s bundle of joy to arrive.

She said the forecast calls for more rain, so she plans on staying at the clinic until the next baby is born or the streets improve.

“It’s still flooded, unless I want to take another ride,” she said.
