Everyone celebrates life's big milestones in their own time, of course... but we do love seeing the stats!

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS), mums are having babies later than ever

They report that the average first-time mum in the UK is now 28.6 years old.

That number comes from 2015 statistics and is slightly higher than the average in 2014, which was 28.5.

As well, over half (53 percent) of all live births were to mums aged 30 or older, and more than two-thirds (68 percent) of fathers were 30 and up.

Overall, people seem to be putting off parenthood until they are older. The average father's age increased from 33.1 in 2014 to 33.2 in 2015, and the average mum's went up from 30.2 to 30.3.

The ONS is not surprised by this trend.

"Falling birth rates among the under-30s and rising birth rates at older ages reflect trends evident since the mid-1970s to delay childbearing to later ages," said Nicola Haines, a spokesperson for the ONS' Vital Statistics Outputs Branch, in a statement.

She also noted, "The average age of mums and dads in England and Wales has increased by almost 4 years over the last 4 decades."

The Economist observed that this trend of older parents has also been seen in southern and eastern Europe. In the mid-1990s western Europe led with the highest average age for first-time mums, while women in southern and eastern Europe gave birth for the first time at much younger ages.

However, by 2015 the regions seemed to have converged as far as age goes for first-time mothers.

In the UK, older parents tend to have children when they are married, the ONS reported.

About 67 percent of women aged 30 to 39 giving birth in the UK were in either a marriage or civil partnership, compared with only four percent of women under the age of 20.

The proportion of cohabiting parents has increased greatly over the years, with 32 percent of births in the UK being registered to unmarried cohabiting couples in 2015. This is a sizeable leap from 2005 when 27 percent of all births were to unmarried cohabiting parents.

Are you surprised by these trends, mums?
