Talk about a shock to the system!

When Ashley Johnson felt slight pains in her stomach last week, she thought little of it.

But when the pains started getting worse, the young Australian mum told her husband Matt not to go anywhere.

"Matt took our son Malakai to my mum's house, and I got into the shower and the pains were getting a lot worse...that's when I realised it was labour."

Her contractions were around two minutes apart, so she got dressed and they drove to the hospital.

But her baby was intent on coming into the world, and she ended up giving birth in the hospital car park!

The biggest shock was yet to come, however.

"I could feel the baby moving down and it was a different feeling," she said. "I could feel his head starting to move down."

Matt darted into the hospital and came back with a nurse, and a wheelchair, but he was shocked to see the baby's head was starting to come out - in his amniotic sac.

Just two pushes later, baby Kalani was out.

"He had all of this stuff all over his head and body," she said.

"Matt broke it and turned him on his side and then put him on my chest. Bub was lying on me as 10 to 15 staff came running out and we were both crying sitting in the front seat of the car before they put me on a bed and rushed me inside."

The healthy newborn was born in his caul - an extremely rare occurrence where the baby is born with the amniotic sac still around its head and body.

Despite the eventful birth, Ashley is proud that she maintained her composure, especially given she gave birth in such a public place.

"I had to pretend that nobody was around and ignore all the people in the car park as I think it would have put me off and it would have been a lot harder," she said.

How wonderful that she and Matt didn't go into panic mode, and fair play to Matt for acting fast and freeing baby Kalani the way he did. Good going!

SHARE if you reckon Ashley was super calm and collected.
