As the vast majority of us mums can attest, the run-up to Christmas means we are inundated with lists, requests and present ideas from our little ones.

But for one little girl from Basingstoke, Christmas wasn't about getting her hands on the latest must-have toy, but about giving back and helping others.

Five-year-old Bella Wiles suggested that her parents, instead of splurging on her over the festive season, use that money to help her help the homeless.

Proud mum Samantha Elliott told the Basingstoke Gazette: "We couldn't ignore her request and took her shopping to buy hats, gloves, socks, underwear etc."

And it didn't stop there.

Bella also used her free-time over the festive period to help her mother prepare hot meals for the less fortunate among us - a move which has seen her dubbed 'a guardian angel' by countless people in the area.

"Bella is becoming known as a little guardian angel. I'm so proud of her but it's hard not to get choked up talking to these people who are out in these freezing cold nights whilst we are warm at home," Samantha said.

"If people took the time to talk to these people they would realise  that a lot of them have fallen on tough times."

"They are friendly and welcome a hot meal and more than anything they are happy they are being spoken to like human beings," Bella's mum insisted.

Unsurprisingly given her clear philanthropic nature, Belle won't be limiting her endeavours to the festive season, with mum Samantha explaining that her little girl has established a Just Giving page to raise money to help more homeless people in addition to donating funds to the Camrose Centre.

At a time when countless numbers of us fall victim to the commercialisation of the season, Bella is a true inspiration.
