Having the ‘birds and the bees’ talk with our little ones is not something that us mums really look forward to, to be honest!

The awkward conversation, the embarrassing terminology, the red faces – it’s not exactly a fun way to spend Sunday.

And no matter what you expect to happen, the reality is always very different.

1. How much they actually know

Expectation:

You don't think they know anything now nothing so you can start on a clean plate and only give information that you are comfortable with them knowing.

Reality:

They will know a lot more than you’d like to think and will ask questions about body parts or, ahem, certain activities that you can’t bear to say aloud.

2. You will be calm and collected

Expectation:

You will maintain your composure for the entire talk: your face won’t go red, you won’t giggle and you certainly won’t stumble over your words.

Reality:

Your face is red thinking about even starting the conversation.

3. You’ll only have to do it once

Expectation:

They’ll be well informed by the time you finished with this conversation that they won’t need to ask you any more questions ever again.

Reality:

You will have stumbled over so many words that your little on will be left more confused than ever.

4. They will listen and ask questions

Expectation:

You expect your little one to ask lots of questions that you’ve prepared yourself for all eventualities.

Reality:

They will be just as embarrassed as you when you mention the word penis.

5. It will only take about five minutes

Expectation:

It will take about an hour or two to get through the whole thing.

Reality:

Your little one will become bored after about five minutes.
