Where would we be without our furry friends? This question has surely crossed the Duffy family’s minds over the past number of days.
The family, from Co. Down, are crediting their heroic dog Teddy with saving their five-year-old son’s life, after he got stuck in a spinning tumble dryer.
Riley Gedge-Duffy, who has Down’s syndrome, sustained burns to his head, back and arms after climbing into the machine – which started itself, automatically.
Sensing that Riley was in danger, cockapoo Teddy ran upstairs to where the little boy’s mother was hoovering.
Teddy is then said to have raised the alarm and alerted the mother by ‘going berserk’.
When Riley’s mum got downstairs, she noticed that her younger son was missing – and quickly copped on to what was happening.
Dad Aaron told the Press Association: “They could hear banging and crashing and could see his iPad going round and round.”
“We suspect he was inside for a couple of minutes. She pulled Riley out and started pouring cold water over him,” he added.
Riley was rushed to hospital and treated for burns and bruising. Thankfully, the little boy is said to be recovering well after his ordeal.
The family, meanwhile, has heaped praise on their four-legged friend.
“It doesn’t bear thinking about what might have happened if the dog had not been there,” dad Aaron said.
Well done, Teddy!
