She was found guilty of second-degree murder last week, along with her father Thomas, and now details of Molly Martens Corbett’s pre-trial TV interview have been revealed.
Molly and Thomas are facing into a minimum of 20 years’ imprisonment for the murder of Irishman Jason Corbett, who was bludgeoned to death in August 2015.
While Molly and Thomas had always argued self-defence, a three-week trial ended with a guilty verdict last week.
Since, footage of Molly’s 20/20 interview has been shared, in which the 33-year-old claims that she was unhappy in her marriage to Jason – and that she only stayed in it for the sake of his children, Jack and Sarah.
“I couldn’t imagine – sometimes I thought, maybe I am being selfish; maybe their lives would be better,” she told her ABC interviewer.
“But, ultimately, I always came to the same conclusion – that it wouldn’t be better for them to lose a second mother.”
It was previously revealed that Molly had requested to adopt Jack and Sarah, but Jason was not keen to make an agreement.
“I felt like he was actually going to follow through with the adoption papers,” Molly recalled, in the interview.
“I would feel more confident about securing my rights to the children. He was very controlling, and very possessive.”
The interview comes just days after Jack’s victim impact statement was read out in court, with the 12-year-old branding his late father’s second wife a ‘murderer’.
Molly is said to have ‘sobbed’ in court as a letter was shared from Jack, who currently lives under the guardianship of his aunt, in Limerick, with his sister Sarah.
“I will never be able to give him [Jason] a hug, to give him a present; [for him] to help me up when I’m down,” the letter read.
“He will never watch me grow into a teenager, see me get married, or catch a ball.
“She [Martens Corbett] has put this burden on this family, and it will not be done until she is put away.”
It also emerged during the trial that, after the death of their father, Molly had tried to reach out to the children through Facebook. In messages share in the media, she can be seen referring to herself as ‘Mom’.
