From standing up, to lying down there are plenty of positions for labour – some obviously more effective than others.

If the traditional methods aren't working for you, why not give these five alternatives a go:

1. Dancing

We don’t mean crank up the tunes and start busting a few moves around the room, but the gentle rocking of side-to-side dancing, with your partner holding you, can help you relax and focus on your breathing.  However, you will need to move into a different position when it finally comes to pushing.

2. Standing squat

This involves your partner holding you under your arms while you stand in a squatting position. This allows you to use gravity to your advantage whilst making contractions less painful and more effective.  However, it is easy to get tired this way and you will need someone strong to be able to hold you up.

3. Knee-chest

This involves you kneeling on the ground or bed with your chest positioned on your knee, or as close as possible. This is can help if you are delivering a large baby and is also effective in avoiding tearing. However, you might find it hard to feel connected with those in the room.

4. Birthing stool

Quite like you’re sitting on the toilet, the birthing stool allows you to expand your pelvis as you are sitting up. Pushing as if you are passing a bowel movement, the birthing stool allows you to use gravity to your advantage.

5. Walking

This is a really great way to reduce pain and helps your contractions work better. It also helps to align your baby in the pelvis. However, you won’t be able to do this if you are suffering from high blood pressure as it is difficult to monitor you.

Remember, always discuss your birthing positions with your midwife or doctor to ensure it is the right way for you.
