A child has died after a transatlantic flight was diverted to Shannon Airport in the south-west of Ireland.

The girl, aged ten, was travelling to the UK with her three adult siblings on an Air Canada flight bound for London Heathrow

The Boeing 787-800 jet was flying off the coast of Co Mayo when it was diverted to Shannon. Emergency medical services were on standby once the airplane landed at around 7.40pm.

However, tragically the child died at University Hospital Limerick shortly afterwards.

It is believed that the girl suffered a cardiac arrest mid-flight.

The plane later continued its journey to London, landing at around 9.20pm.
