At around 4am today, while most of us were still in bed, PC Steve Parmenter and PC Rob Ruston were both helping a women deliver her baby after they spotted her leaning against a bollard in distress on West Ferry Road, E14.

The two officers from Tower Hamlets Borough were on routine patrol when they noticed the woman was in pain. It was only after they stopped to give her assistance did they realise that she was heavily pregnant.

In fact, the mum-to-be, whose husband has gone to get help at a local medical centre, was in the final stages of labour and her baby's head was crowning.

When they discovered how far along she was the two officers helped to safely deliver the baby before placing the little girl in a Metropolitan Police jacket to keep warm.

"I feel overwhelmed and extremely proud for someone so young in the job to have helped in this way, and wish the parents and the baby well, it was a great end to a very difficult week," PC Steve Parmenter said of the experience.

The mother and baby, who were then checked over by the nearby Barkantine Medical Birthing Centre, are said to be doing well.

PC Rob Ruston, also from Tower Hamlets Borough's Response Team 2, said: "I was so pleased I could offer my help and assisted in delivering a beautiful baby girl, just doing my job and service to the community of London."
