Police in Greater Manchester have appealed to the public for assistance following an attempted sexual assault at the weekend.

According to reports, a 19-year-old woman was making her way home from the All Saint's Park area of the city at 05.30 am on Saturday morning when she was attacked from behind by an unknown assailant.

It has been established that the victim's attacker, who is believed to have been wearing a white printed T-shirt and jeans, attempted to rape her, but fled after being disturbed.

In addition to urging the public to come forward with any information they may have, police have released an image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the horrifying assault.

While commenting on the severity of Saturday's incident, Inspector Andy Smith asserted that officials were increasing security in order to prevent further attacks.

"I recognise the concern this incident may cause due to its proximity to the universities but I would like to provide reassurance."

"We have increased police patrols in the area, and the victim is being supported by specially trained officers," Inspector Smith assured the public.

Commenting on the image which has been released to the public, he continued: "An image has been issued of a man we would like to speak to and I would ask anyone who recognises him to get in touch."

"I would also make a direct plea to the man himself to come forward so we can eliminate him from our enquiries," said Inspector Smith while insisting that identifying the victim's attacker is of the utmost importance.
